Haiti:
Magnitude of 7.0M
January 12th, 2010
52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or higher.
Estimated 230,000 people died.
300,000 injured.
1,000,000 made homeless.
A tsunami wave occurred shortly after the earthquake. Taking three people out to sea.
Chile:
occurred off the cost of Maule Region on February 27th, 2010
8.8 on the moment magnitude scale
lasted up to 90 seconds
Seismologist estimate that the earthquake was powerful enough that it may have made the day shorter by 1.26 microseconds. It also moved the Earth's figure axis by 8cm.
It also was strong enough that it managed to shift some cities to the west.
Many died and many were injured. 302 reported deaths.
Building collapsed.
I think we heard about the Haiti earthquake more then the Chile one because of the total death and injury count. More people were effected by the Haiti earthquake even though it wasn't as strong as the Chile one. The Haiti earthquake also caused more damage to buildings leaving more people homeless.
The Chile earthquake was more powerful by 63.1.
