Da Vinci (the genius)

Da Vinci was one great man. He also was a great artist. The Golden Ratio shows how math and fractions are represented in art and the human body. To be considered "perfect" you would have these ratios. He used these ratios in some of his other drawings/paintings including but not limited to the Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa has had many damages happen to it. A man threw a rock at the painting and the elbow had to be repaired. There was also damage caused by acid. To Leonardo she is incomplete. The fingers aren't fully drawn. She has also been stolen and kept for years, after she was recovered they discovered an orange spec on the painting. The horse was also important and the original was shot at for practice and got destroyed. It has been remade.
There is no art without science.
Cool Quote about a structure: "But be sure that the force is rapid and if the above effect is not obtained, waste no more time on it."

Credit Card

What I found interesting is that the amount you pay in the end because of interest can sometimes be doubled. I also found out that a lot of people choose to do this. It doesn't make sense. I wouldn't want to pay double on my monthly bill because I have bought things that I can't afford.  Some people are dumb and thats the reason they are in debt.

Earthquakes: Haiti and Chile

Haiti:
Magnitude of 7.0M
January 12th, 2010
52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or higher.
Estimated 230,000 people died.
300,000 injured.
1,000,000 made homeless.
A tsunami wave occurred shortly after the earthquake. Taking three people out to sea.

Chile:
occurred off the cost of Maule Region on February 27th, 2010
8.8 on the moment magnitude scale
lasted up to 90 seconds
Seismologist estimate that the earthquake was powerful enough that it may have made the day shorter by 1.26 microseconds. It also moved the Earth's figure axis by 8cm.
It also was strong enough that it managed to shift some cities to the west.
Many died and many were injured. 302 reported deaths.
Building collapsed.

I think we heard about the Haiti earthquake more then the Chile one because of the total death and injury count. More people were effected by the Haiti earthquake even though it wasn't as strong as the Chile one. The Haiti earthquake also caused more damage to buildings leaving more people homeless.
The Chile earthquake was more powerful by 63.1.

Comparing House Prices

A. Data Used:
1930: $7145
1940: $3920
1950: $14500
1960: $18500
1970: $23400
1980: $68714
1990: $123000

B. r= .95

C. y=(867.36)(1.05)^x

D. For every 10 years the cost goes up 1.05. The cost started at 867.36.
The graph shows how the housing prices have increased and how drastically they did. Houses used to be way cheaper then they are now, many reasons could've effected this.

E. Its important to be able to understand regression graphs and scatterplots because it shows you the relationship between y and x and how one effects the other. It also tells you if its linear or exponential.

Functions

y=x
An example of x in every day life is simple interest. The graph of this function easily shows how the price would increase with the interest being added. The longer your paying for something the more interest you will end up paying.

e^x: An example of e raised to the x in every day life is compound interest. Compound interest is like simple interest. Generally you use it when taking out a loan or paying something off. The graph of a compound interest is different though. It isn't just a straight line, it curves. This curve happens because compound interest is paid on the original amount and the accumulated past interest.

y=the square root of x: A real life example of the square root of x is showing the difference between cost, revenue, and profit. So if a company is making something it costs so much to produce the product. But after the product is made then revenue costs also take effect. Hopefully the product that the company is making has a higher rate of profit then it did total cost.
